The teenage and adolescent years are stressful on developing minds and bodies. ![]() ![]() Anorexia nervosa often occurs comorbidly with other psychiatric mental health disorders. Symptoms of anorexia nervosa include dry skin, fainting, anemia, and fatigue ( Anorexia nervosa ). Those with anorexia nervosa may restrict their food intake, complain of being “fat”, avoid meals, and exercise immensely. Anorexia nervosa is a mental disorder that alters a person’s perception of their body, causes difficulty in maintaining appropriate body weight, and is characterized by weight loss. It is suggested that anorexia nervosa impacts the form and function of the brain negatively, due to the incidence of comorbid psychiatric and psychological disorders, abnormal neurotransmitter activity in the brain, and abnormal sleep patterns and sleep deprivation in those with the disorder. Anorexia nervosa is a mental illness that impacts the brain in various negative ways by changing the relationship that victims of the illness have with food and eating habits. One mental illness that may alter the brain in a variety of ways is anorexia nervosa. Mental illnesses can drastically alter the function of the brain. Individuals can be predisposed to mental illnesses in a variety of ways. Stress is not the only factor in developing a mental health disorder. Life can be incredibly stressful, and too much stress on the brain can lead to the development of mental illness. It is well protected physically and chemically, but changes––for better or worse––can still occur. The brain controls almost every aspect of human life. It can be argued that one of the most complex organs in the body that contributes to these functions is the brain.
